Lighting the Way to Better Cancer Outcomes
Lighting the way aims to increase screening for -and early detection of- prostate cancer and to improve cancer related outcomes and satisfaction with care by employing culturally appropriate navigation protocols to facilitate best results at all points along the cancer continuum of care. The program uses Light the Way (an evidence-based program first implemented in Hawaii) as a framework, which increased completion prostate screening in rural communities. It is implemented by lay patient navigators who educate patients about cancer screening, send them phone and mail reminders to schedule screening, schedule appointments and provide transportation, help with paperwork, talk with doctors, and find ways to pay for care.
